Video Storytelling Project
Project Date: Spring 2026
Project Overview: Throughout the semester, video storytelling has been a huge conversation and something I have thoroughly enjoyed learning more about, the different aspects, as I am a content creator who is consistently trying to hone my video editing and storytelling skills. The projects over the semester allowed me to explore the power of video storytelling across different platforms using tools like Canva, Edits by Instagram, and even Riverside.
The Problem: In today’s digital industries, people consume content left and right, so it is important to make sure all forms of content make a lasting impact, whether video or photo. Video content is produced, but some people (including myself) might struggle to make it feel intentional and to tell the full story. I have made it my mission to continue to grow in this area!
In my own experience as a Wedding and Special Events content creator, that visual meaning is so crucial to capture and deliver all the more. These moments only happen once, and the way they are captured is something I want to remember for years to come.
The Solution: To continue to grow and challenge myself, I approached the class, but especially video projects, through the same lens that I have when I capture real moments as a content creator. I explored these platforms and editing tools to better understand how they serve the storytelling process.
Video is a powerful storytelling tool.
Check out some of my work here and see how much I have grown in my editing and storytelling style over the years.
The first step, once filming is understanding what makes a video feel memorable for the people or group it is designated for. It’s really important to focus on those small details that shape the way the content is received. Some that come to mind and that I have a mental checklist of are:
The first shots of the video and how quickly it captures attention
The natural flow and order of clips
The type of music that sets the tone
Text overlays and captions for clarity
Any effects or transitions to create a more smooth expereince instead of being distracting
Visual consistency with colors, fonts, and layout
In all three tools, I found that each is used for widely different purposes. Canva is great for branded templates and making videos more cohesive. It is especially great for beginners. Edits by Instagram is a great tool for short-form content, specifically social media. I work with social media clients where I design specifically for social media, so visual interest and mobile-first storytelling are most important. Riverside is a platform that I am new to, but I have been very impressed with. Its focus is on high-quality video and audio production. Many Riverside users are using this for podcasts. As someone who would love to produce a podcast or create a centralized place to share my experiences and highlight other successful individuals, I am excited to continue to explore more of their capabilities.
Results: This class and challenged thinking have helped me grow more confident in my ability to use video as a storytelling tool across three digital platforms. I gained hands-on experience with Canva, Edits by Instagram, and Riverside while also learning where in the storytelling process each could be used. I am excited to continue exploring more platforms and diving deeper into these tools, as well!
